Motodrome Drifter - A Game For Arduboy

Like the majority of the world it's very possible you missed my first game, Super Bubs Adventure.  So for my second game I thought I'd reduce the audience even further, make the graphics far worse, and develop it for the Arduboy, a niche handheld.

I wanted to make a super sprint style game, and didn't want to take 6 months developing it in Unity. I’ve had the little Arduboy sitting in a drawer since the original Kickstarter (10 years ago?!?).  So I used the Arduino IDE and took 7 days to create the game, mostly evenings.

The game is called 'Motodrome Drifter' - You race around a track trying to beat your lap times.  You accelerate with the A button, then while accelerating, if you hold the B button, you'll be able to drift around sharp corners. It probably won't win an award for graphics (it's all basic lines and geometry), but the gameplay is still rather fun if you like the drifting physics.  

There's also a 2 player mode, where you can pass the Arduboy between players, and try and win the championship.  There are 7 courses, but it's possible to mod the code and create your own.

And there's a single track version of the code to help speed up development

...just copy and past the coordinates into line 14 onwards. You might need to adjust the starting point coordinates (line 41) and where the car starts from (line 44, 45, and 46).

A High Intensity Interval Training Timer (HIIT) for exercise

using the built in LED for Arduino Uno/Nano/etc.  Simply plug in

the Arduino, and you'll get the following 10 minute HIIT workout:

1. 5 seconds flashing to show start of workout.

2. 1 minute warmup, displayed with slow flashes.

3. 30 seconds high intensity flashes, then 1 minute slow flashes. Repeats 5 times.

5. Final flashes for 5 seconds to indicate end of work out

Superbooth 2026

 

If you're wondering why your town is lacking balding bearded men this weekend, it's because we're at Superbooth in Berlin. After fighting through my fellow clones, so far I would say,  my favourite synth was the Udo super 6 and the Nord stage compact 4.  I can also report that massive trousers are also very much back in style, as are green bomber jackets.

Free Behringer CZ-1 Mini Editor

This editor has taken me forever to complete! It's by far and away the most advanced one I've built yet, featuring 90 or so sliders.  I'd had no experience with Phase Distortion Synthesis before starting this project, so it meant reading a few books and watching hours of you tube videos.  There's bound to be a few bugs, but it sure beats using the single button on the hardware to program the unit. 

The UI has also been designed to shed some light on how to program it, with panels being highlighted when accessible, and animations to convey what is being changed.  Hopefully it should help somebody.  Every control has it's function listed, you just need to hover the mouse over it.

Free Behringer UB-1 Micro Editor

I've made another free online midi editor, this time for the Behringer UB-1 micro synth.  My UB-1 was meant to have been delivered back in January, but it's unfortunately been delayed for months now.  Anyway, I used the manual to get all of the MIDI CC data, and remapped it all from my original JT4000m editor.  It's currently untested, but when my unit arrives, I'll confirm it's correctly working.

My Behringer JT Mini Editor is now available for free.  I'd originally brought the JT4000m synth and had fun making an editor for that, so I bought a few more to play around with.  I probably should've read the manual before ordering though, because the JT Mini doesn't have that many accessible midi CC controls.  Oh well! I made it anyway, so hopefully it might be of some use to somebody.

Super Saw Synth created in Klang Studio

I recently took the Basic Audio Programming course offered by PointBlank, and https://www.theaudioprogrammer.com/ and this was my version of the Super Saw Synth. It was created using Klang Studio, using seven detuned SAW waves. The course is only about 4 hours long but it serves as a great intro into DSP principles. I can only recommend.

I'm also currently going through the Audio Programmer / Matthijs Hollemans books: Creating Synthesizer Plug-Ins with C++ and JUCE, and The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Audio Plug-in Development. I'm only half way through the plugin book, but it's been really great so far, a lot less academic (aka 'hard') and much more hands on learning than the Will Pirkle books (Designing Audio Effect Plugins & Designing Software Synthesizer Plugins).

VR Demo - Medical Training Scene

I put together this little demo over the weekend so it's a little bit rough, but it gets the basic point across.  There's loads more that could've been added, like smooth transitions when the text boxes open, highlighting outlines of selected objects, sounds to indicate hover activity etc, but I ran out of time.

I'd have really liked to add physics to the skeleton bones and made it interactable, but alas...

No lights are baked, the lighting is live running with a high FPS on a mobile RTX 3060.  The screen recording doesn't really do it justice.

Built using Unity, VR Interaction framework and a few custom scripts for the interactions.
